An 81 year old woman had to be rushed to hospital after suffering from smoke inhalation during a fire in an apartment block at the top of avenida de la Torre in Torre del Mar.
Council signs contract for Tourism Marketing Plan
The Council has signed a €21,175 contract with the company Auren to prepare a draft Tourism Marketing Plan, with the goal of producing a marketable tourist ‘product’.

Negotiations to acquire the old Lope de Vega theatre and cinema, the largest in the Axarquia with 1,143 seats, are in ‘full swing’ according to the mayor of Vélez-Málaga, Francisco Delgado Bonilla.

There are activities for the youngsters aged between 5 years and 8 years during the Semana Blanca spring break, organised by the School of Music and Dance in Vélez-Málaga.
Seven arrested for making false robbery claims
National Police in Vélez-Málaga have arrested seven people for crimes against the administration of justice, making false allegations and simulating crimes. Six of the detainees have also been charged with fraud.
Delays to Torre del Mar swimming pool
The new indoor swimming pool in the Cerro del Águila of Torre del Mar will not now be completed in March as had earlier been announced by the mayor, Francisco Delgado. The latest estimate is completion during the second quarter, but officials would not give any indication as to when it will actually open for use.
Food for the needy
The Association `The Phoenix Social Club ‘of Torre del Mar has delivered 100 kilos of food, as well as €500 in cash, to the Red Cross in Vélez-Málaga which will serve to help families in need in the Axarquia. The Association has been conducting a food collection campaign during the past few weeks.
Works completed in calles Pizarro and Evaristo Guerra
The works in calles Pizarro and Evaristo Guerra have now been completed. The €145,000 project, financed 50-50 by the Provincial Council and Municipal Council under the Provincial Plan for Works and Services. To celebrate the completion of the works, the mayor, Francisco Delgado, Councillor for Infrastructure, Concha Labao, and the artist Evaristo Guerra, after whom one of the streets is named, visited the area.
New ACEV president
Manuel Escaño Quero has been elected president of the Vélez-Málaga Association of Merchants and Entrepreneurs (ACEV). He replaces José Cotilla who resigned after members criticised his participation in the proposed new business park.
Renovation of calle Camelia 60% complete
The renovation of calle Camelia in Almayate is apparently 60% complete, according to the Councillor for Urban Planning and Infrastructure, Concepción Labao, and should be finished in May 2013. The project is costing €168,317 and is being funded through the Program for the Promotion of Employment in Agriculture (Profea).
