Police vehicles in poor state of repair

Local Police officers in Vélez-Málaga have been having to use a strange assortment of municipal vehicles lately due to the poor state of repair of half of their own vehicles.

Huge increases for use of sports facilities

New municipal ordinances approved by the government envisage non-residents having to pay two or three times more than residents for the use of sports facilities, while residents can expect tax increases of between 40% and 150% to use such facilities.

Christmas toy campaign a great success

The toy collection campaign organised by the Spanish Red Cross in Vélez-Málaga has been deemed a great success, the organisation being able to deliver gifts to 180 children up to the age of 14 years in the Axarquia region.

Pedestrian killed in Vélez-Málaga

A 73 year old man died on Wednesday morning as a result of being hit by a vehicle on avenida Juan Carlos I, near to the El Ingenio roundabout. The incident occurred at 08:30. The man was rushed to the Carlos Haya hospital but died shortly after admission. He had suffered multiple injuries including severe head trauma.

Centre of Contemporary Art

The Centre of Contemporary Art in Vélez-Málaga, the first such facility in Andalucia not located in a provincial capital, is almost a reality after 31 months of work (scheduled was 13 months) and a cost of €2.6 million (original budget €2.4 million).

Tram funding not the responsibility of regional authorities

The Junta de Andalucia has stated that it cannot get involved in the financing of municipal transport systems in which it has no jurisdiction, namely the tram system, and that any such responsibility would belong to the state.

Twinning agreement

The Mayor of Vélez-Málaga, Francisco Delgado Bonilla (PP), and the president of the autonomous city of Melilla,, Juan José Imbroda (PP), have signed a twinning agreement to strengthen bonds of friendship and solidarity, described as important for both locations as it opens a new era of permanent cooperation and sharing of initiatives, experiences and solutions to problems.

Police rescue burning man

National Police officers rescued a man on Thursday morning who was on fire. He was found a short way from his burning car under the motorway bridge at urbanisation Baviera Golf. Early findings suggest a possible suicide attempt although the investigation is still ongoing. The victim is currently in the Carlos Haya hospital in Málaga.

Money in budget for pedestrianisation of calle Del Mar

Vélez-Málaga Council has included an amount of €250,000 in the budget for 2013 for the pedestrianisation of calle Del Mar in Torre del Mar between Avenida de Andalucía and the promenade, a stretch of road last renovated in 2007 at a cost of €1.5 million.
