A is for Aqueduct, the Eagle Aqueduct – Acueducto del Águila – on the N-340 coastal road between Nerja and the village of Maro.
The Eagle Aqueduct, or Eagle Bridge as it is also sometimes known, was built in the 19th century (1879 or 1880, no-one is sure!) under the direction of local master builder Francisco Cantarero and comprises four storeys of superimposed brick arcades with 38 arches.
The aqueduct, still in use today, was damaged by naval fire during the Spanish Civil War and, once the administrative red tape had been suitably finalised, repairs were swiftly carried out….in 2009-2011.
The restored aqueduct was criticised by many as being a ‘bit too pink’, but fortunately the vivid colours are fading a bit.
