C is for Caganer

C is for Caganer, a nativity figurine depicted in the act of having a poo and is found in many nativity scenes in Cataluña and other regions, including Andalucia.

Caganer is literally ‘crapper’ and traditionally the figurine is depicted as a peasant, wearing a traditional Catalan red cap and with his trousers down round his ankles, showing a bare backside, and defecating.

The Caganer also appears in Italy, France and Portugal. The practice is tolerated by the Catholic church.

Recent innovations have seen ‘caganers’ bearing the features of footballers and other famous people.
