G is for González. Felipe González Márquez, born March 5th 1942 in Sevilla, is, to date, the longest-serving Prime Minister of Spain.
Felipe González, a social-democrat, was Secretary General of the Spanish Socialist Workers’ Party (PSOE) from 1974 to 1997 and held the post of Prime Minister from 1962 to 1996, serving four successive mandates.
He lost power in 1996 when he was defeated at the general election by José Maria Aznar of the Partido Popular (PP).
