New projects under the Plan for Sustainable Tourism

The Mancomunidad de Municipios de la Costa del Sol Oriental-Axarquía (Commonwealth of the Axarquia) is expected to approve four new projects to be financed by the Junta de Andalucia under the Plan for Sustainable Tourism.

Axarquia avocados

The avocado season has finished in the Axaerquia and the Asociación Agraria de Jóvenes Agricultores (Asaja) report  a harvest of 40,200 tons valued at €46 million. Around 10,000 tons are for the domestic market, the rest are destined for the main European markets of France, Britain and Germany.

Another tax being proposed

The Junta de Andalucia has announced plans to create a new tax on plastic bags for single use, the rate being 10 cents.

Andalucian sheep farming in decline

Falling prices, reduced consumption and frozen lamb being imported from Australia and New Zealand are all contributing to the decline of the sheep industry in Andalucia and in Los Pedroches, Córdoba, more than 400 livestock farms have disappeared.

Two North Africans have been rescued this morning from their inflatable toy boat which was drifting aimlessly. The two, who had inadvertently forgotten to take any documentation with them, were in good health and did not require medical assistance.

Debts threaten installation of marker buoys

The beaches in Vélez-Málaga, Algarrobo and Torrox could end up without the marker buoys this summer due to accumulated debts for this service between 2007 and 2009. Only two municipalities, Nerja and Rincón de la Victoria, are fully paid up and guaranteed to be provided with the service.

Decline in unemployment in May

According to the Ministry of Employment and Immigration, unemployment in Spain fell by 76,223 people in May, the second consecutive monthly decline.

Yellow alert for high temperatures

Thirteen provinces in Andalucia, Murcia and the Canary islands are on ‘yellow alert’ for high temperatures today. In some areas of Cádiz, Córdoba, Jaén, Málaga and Sevilla provinces, temperatures could reach 38 degrees.
