Spain has been awarded a total of 638 Blue Flags, 540 for beaches and 98 for marinas, a new record which puts Spain at the top of the list of 46 participating states in the northern hemisphere.
‘Q’ flags officially presented
The Minister of Industry, Energy and Tourism, José Manuel Soria, was one of the many dignitaries attending the annual ceremony yesterday to officially award the ‘Q’ for ‘Quality’ flags to 174 Spanish beaches, including Burriana and Torrecilla in Nerja.

Repairs to Torrox beaches resume again
The lorries full of sand are once again heading to Torrox Costa after the latest operation to repair the beaches had to be called off on Friday due to heavy seas.
69 lifeguards needed for Nerja beaches for the summer
From Monday May 30th to 14:oo on June 3rd, applications can be made for the position of lifeguard on Nerja’s beaches.
Four Blue Flags again for Nerja
Nerja has, for the second year running, notched up four EU ‘Blue Flags’ for its beaches, only being surpassed by Roquetas (Almeria) with six and Puerto de Santa María (Cádiz) with five.
Beach improvements
Ready for the Easter and summer holiday periods, three defibrillators are going to be made available, one on Burriana beach, one on Torrecilla beach and one mobile unit. There are also plans to build 250 cycle racks at the various beaches in Nerja as, according to the Council, more and more people are using bicycles.
New toilets for Torrox beaches
The Councillor for Tourism in Torrox, José Pérez (PSA), has been visiting Ferrara Playa to supervise the installation of new toilet facilities.
The summer season
The summer beach season (when lifeguard services are available) was extended from September 15th to September 30th this year, and during that time, the ‘green’ flag flew for 85% of the time, the ‘yellow’ flag for 11% and the ‘red’ flag for just 4% of the time.

The temperatures may have plummeted a couple of degrees but it is still hot and there is still no wind to speak of. The main noticeable difference with the onset of September is, of course, the ability to actually find a parking space should you so desire.
