Foreign Minister José Manuel García-Margallo has announced plans to close the Cervantes Institute in Gibraltar, reportedly saying it did not make sense to have a centre promoting Spanish language and culture in what is considered a ‘Spanish territory’.

For the second time, Nobel prize winning author Mario Vargas Llosa has turned down a government offer to become president of the Cervantes Institute, although he reiterated his willingness to cooperate with the institute.
