Villarreal miss opportunity to go top

Villarreal missed a golden opportunity to go to the top of the pile for the first time in their history after they were held to a 2-2 draw by Hércules on Monday night, although newcomers Hércules have been pretty impressive so far this season

Real and Barca both win

A bright start for the Blue and Whites against Real Madrid and for a while they looked the far better side, but it was Real who opened the scoring after half an hour, Higuaín tapping in a sitter.

Valencia stay top

League leaders Valencia maintained their unbeaten start to the season after former Athletic striker Aritz Aduriz scored his fourth goal of the season and substitute Vicente added a late second against Athletic Bilbao. Igor Gabilondo ensured a nervous final few seconds with a goal from a free-kick deep in injury time.

Málaga 2-3 Villarreal

Málaga played host to Villarreal on Monday evening, a game which saw five goals in the first 33 minutes. The Blue and Whites opened the scoring after only four minutes, Eliseu shooting from the edge of the box.

Hércules too strong for Sevilla

Newly promoted Hércules claimed their second major scalp as they beat Sevilla 2-0, Trézéguet getting a goal in each half, the first from the penalty spot. The result also saw the departure of Sevilla manager Antonio Alvarez, who will be replaced by ex Mallorca coach Gregorio Manzano.

Valencia back on top

The top teams have so far struggled against the newly promoted teams, this time Real Madrid being held to a 0-0 draw by Levante.

A win for the Blue and Whites

Valencia failed to regain top spot in La Liga after a 1-1 draw with Atletico Madrid on Wednesday night.

Real Madrid 3-0 Espanyol

Midweek games in La Liga and, for the moment at least, Real Madrid have moved to the top of the pile after a 3-0 win over Espanyol.

Málaga 1-2 Sevilla

Although the Blue and Whites took an early lead against local rivals Sevilla at La Rosaleda, Rondón scoring in the 14th minute, it was Sevilla who ended up with the three points, Alfaro and Cáceres the scorers.
