After over ten years of bureaucratic wrangling, it looks like America is finally about to allow the import of avocados from Spain. Around 80% of avocados production is in Málaga province and the Axarquia coast.
Reservoirs in Jaén draining off water
Eight out of the eleven reservoirs in Jaén province have been releasing large amounts of water following the recent heavy rains. Two reservoirs in Málaga province, Guadalhorce and Guadalteba, have also been draining off water. Some are releasing in excess of 100,000 litres per second.
Parque Litoral in Málaga to be closed at night
Málaga Council has begun to erect 800 metres of fencing around the 50,000 square metre Parque Litoral in an attempt to stop the trend of vandalism in the area which has led to the burning of playground apparatus on a number of occasions.
Man found burning in Málaga has died from his wounds
The 57 year old man found on fire near his burning car in Málaga on Wednesday has died from his injuries. After initial treatment at the Carlos Haya hospital in Málaga he had been transferred to the Hospital Virgen del Rocío.
Jealousy leads to stabbing incident in Málaga
National Police in Málaga have arrested a 44 year old man who tried to run over his former girlfriend and then stabbed a friend of hers who tried to protect her.
Málaga banned from European competition
Malaga have been banned from European competition for at least one season because of unpaid bills. The suspension will not affect Málaga’s current Champions League campaign but covers any time in the next four seasons should they again qualify for Europe.
Rubbish piling up in Rincón de la Victoria
The strike by garbage collectors in Rincón de la Victoria, Málaga province, is in its fourth day and an estimated 120 tons of rubbish has accumulated on the streets. The town has a population of around 40,000 people.
Eibar 1-1 Málaga
Second Division B minnows Eibar, who have already knocked out Athletic Bilbao in the Copa del Rey, put on another great performance against Málaga last night in their fifth round first leg tie. An injury time strike from Onyewu levelled the score at 1-1 after Eibar had taken the lead through Añibarro.
Woman in Málaga commits suicide three days after receiving eviction notice
A 56 year old woman died on Friday morning after throwing herself from the fourth floor balcony of her home in calle Río Guadiana in the Los Corazones district of Málaga. Earlier this week she apparently received an eviction notice due to non-payment of the mortgage, although police have not yet confirmed this as the reason for the suicide.
Full streets but little consumer spending
There were plenty of people out on the streets in Málaga on Saturday, Día de la Inmaculada (Immaculate Conception), and most shops in the historical centre, as well as the commercial centres, opened up for business.
