Three arrested for attempted murder

Two men and a woman, all aged between 18 years and 22 years, have been arrested in Málaga in connection with the robbery of, and subsequent setting fire to, a man on September 9th. They are charged with attempted murder and extortion.

Six women freed in Operation Peseta

The National Police has dismantled an organisation in Málaga dedicated to the exploitation of women for sexual purposes. Two men, both Rumanian, have been detained as part of what was known as ‘Operation Peseta’. The organisation recruited women in Rumania and then forced them to work as prostitutes in Spain, either in clubs or on the streets.

60% of dangerous products originate from Asia

In recent weeks, consumer organisations in Málaga province have denounced the dangers relating to several products designed for children, such as prams which are unsafe, bottles and pacifiers which could cause suffocation and toys which expand by up to 600% when submerged in water.

Heavy rains cause much flooding

The heavy rains of Saturday morning left many garages and patios flooded in Málaga province, particularly along the western Costa del Sol. In Sevilla, forty litres of water per square metre fell in less than an hour. On the A-49 near Camas, the rains caused a lorry to topple from a bridge. Fortunately, the driver escaped unhurt.

The Emergency Services received 190 calls within a few minutes last night as what sounded like an explosion was heard in places as far apart as Torrox and Fuengirola along the coast and from Álora to Alhaurin de la Torre inland. Two police officers, patrolling calle Nueva in Málaga city, spotted a moped rider heading down the pavement. The rider, seeing the police, immediately shot off down calle Liborio García. The two officers gave chase on foot.

Málaga province hotel occupancy in August

Figures for the average hotel occupancy rate in Málaga province during August show a decrease of 4.62% when compared to last year. The actual number of people staying in hotels in Málaga province was down by 1.9%. There were slightly more Spanish tourists choosing to stay in hotels but the number of foreigners was down by 4.8%. Pregnant driver of overcrowded scooter gets 12 month jail sentence

A judge has sentenced a woman to one year in prison and disqualified her from driving for twelve months after finding her guilty of reckless driving. Heavily pregnant at the time, the 26 year scooter rider had her three other children on the machine as well!

Civil war graves

The family of the Spanish poet and playwright Federico Garcia Lorca have dropped their objection to the excavation of his grave. Lorca was executed, along wth a teacher and two trade unionists, by General Francisco Franco’s nationalists at the start of the civil war in 1936.
