Wildlife officials in New Zealand nursed some 343 penguins back to health after they were tarred when a cargo ship ran aground on a reef near Tauranga in early October, covering them in oil. Now the little critters are being set free once more. Penguins

An Emperor penguin has turned up on Peka Peka beach in New Zealand, 4,000 miles from its home, after presumably taking a wrong turn and getting lost while hunting for fish. It certainly does look baffled by its surroundings.

Sad state of affairs
A remarkable story from New Zealand, not only because of the courage of the woman concerned, but also because of the general comments by people in the UK. Vipul Sharma, aged 22, was found guilty of abduction and two charges of rape by the Auckland District Court in New Zealand.
