As I walked…

As I set off this morning, the author Laurie Lee suddenly sprang to mind, and I began wondering, if he were around today, would he have changed the title of his autobiography to: As I Walked Round It One Midsummer Morning. Never seen such a humungus pile of residual canine waste right in the centre of the pavement in avenida …

Party at Mandarina…

Last night was party time at the Mandarina as Jenny and Frances decided to celebrate the fifth birthday of the bar with free drinks and tapas for one and all. There was a constant stream of people, many bearing gifts, and it was very often standing room only. A great achievement these days with the economy in the state it’s …

On the rocks…

Had a nice wander along the rocky promontory at the end of Torrecilla beach, a great place to relax away from the general hubbub (apparently one of the few words of Celtic origin to be incorporated in the English language). Yesterday, although the beach was packed, there was no-one on the rocks, not even fishermen. Most unusual.

Heaving…

Wandering around last night, while many of the more traditional bars were empty or as good as, quite a few of the Spanish tapas bars were doing a roaring trade. Los Pescaitos on calle Chaparil was packed to the rafters and the terrace was full, overfull even, with people queuing to get in. Alameda and The Andrea Inn (biggest tapas …

Surf’s up on Calahonda…

It may have been virtually windless yesterday but the waves were pretty big by the evening.

Never before seen photos

Today marks the 65th anniversary of the dropping of the first atomic bomb on the Japanese city of Hiroshima. This year is also the first time a representative of the US representative has participated in the annual commemoration. LIFE magazine has also published a series of never before seen photos from both Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

Injuns, bars and other bits…

The economic crisis appears to have even taken its toll on the South American musicians playing on the Balcon de Europa, only two of them around last night, the rest seemingly replaced by cardboard cutouts. In a relatively short period of time, two to three years, they have gone from being groups of six to eight people in full regalia …

Fiery sausages…

Quite busy in town last night, a good crowd for the dancing in Plaza Fabrica de los Cangrejos and plenty of people on the Balcon de Europa and in calle Cristo. All the artists were doing a good trade, which is nice to see, as were the ice cream sellers. No street musicians  about last night but you can’t have …

Tern over

Animals are not much different from humans in many ways, except maybe a bit better behaved as a general rule. Nice pictures of a young tern biting off a bit more than he could chew….Ambitious bird… Mother tern looks like she just can’t believe her eyes.

A busy evening

The bouncy castle is now in the Plaza Fabrica de los Cangrejos and operational during the evenings, as is the trampoline. More of the crafts stalls,  the henna tattoo artists and similar are now setting up in the square during the evenings.
