Dia del Pedal 2010 in Nerja

February 28th is Andalucia Day and in Nerja, in addition to the official commemorative acts, it is also Dia del Pedal – Day of the Bicycle. It has become part of the local tradition and each year, the number of entrants is a new record. In 2009, around 1,600 people took part. In 2010, the number of entries was almost …

From the war zone

Regardless of the rights and wrongs of seemingly perpetual military intervention in Afghanistan by the forces of foreign powers, a debate without end except for the unfortunate victims on all sides, there is currently an offensive taking place against the Taliban. The Denver Post, everyone’s favourite read, has published a plog (photo blog) containing a collection of 48 amazingly stunning …

Plaza Cantarero, February 23rd 2010

The renovations in Plaza Cantarero are continuing at a reasonable pace with the pillars for a new pergola in place. The fountain itself hasn’t been touched, but the entire area around it has been dug up. Presumably it will all be finished by the summer, at the latest, given that the estimated completion period was three months or so.

Plaza Cavana, February 20th 2010

Things are slowly starting to take shape in calle Carmen and Plaza Cavana as the building works trundle along. New paving is appearing along one side of the square (the side containing La Caixa and Casa El Luque) and pedestrian access is becoming a little easier. Vehicle access in the area, however, is still fairly restricted with calle Granada often …

Concert for Haiti

A little while ago, Nerja was the scene of a benefit concert for the victims of the terrible earthquake in Haiti. Thanks to Kevin for some absolutely fabulous pictures from the concert, held at the Nerja Cultural Centre.

Plaza Cantarero, February 15th 2010

Oranges are strewn all over the floor as there has been quite a bit of progress on the renovation of Plaza Cantarero (Orange Square). The good news is that the ornamental fountain in the square has not been touched and looks set to remain as it is, or was.

Sunday sunset

After a couple of beautifully sunny days it’s back to rain, but it was a very good weekend and wonderful just to sit by the shore and watch the sun go down. The sound of the sea lapping onto the shore is very relaxing and the stresses and strains of everyday life just seem to evaporate, leaving you refreshed and …

Calle Granada closed to through traffic

The expanding works in Plaza Cavana mean that the bottom of calle Granada is now closed to traffic. The top part is still accessible from the exit of the underground car park. From calle Diputación it is now possible to access calle El Barrio for those wanting to take the scenic route, although the corner is bumpy and great care …

Wanna rumble?

Ignoring the inane references to the Karate Kid and Bruce Lee, and being thankful for the fact that there are (surprisingly) no references to Katie Price or Posh, this feature in the DM is worth a look. A keen photographer spent hours out in the cold to get these excellent shots of two birds of prey fighting in the snow …

Torrecilla beach and area…

A lot of people fishing down on Torrecilla beach this afternoon and I just happened to have my camera in my hand when one of them actually caught something! Quite a few people milling around in Plaza Fabrica de los Cangrejos, many enjoying a drink or a meal on the terraces.
