The Government has approved draft amendments to the Traffic and Road Safety Laws, these to include stiffer penalties and alcohol and drug tests for pedestrians who violate the rules of the road.
Road safety programme for Primary pupils
Torrox Town Hall has started a road safety programme aimed at Primary school pupils. The course has started at the colegio Mare Nostrum and aims to involve all pupils in the municipality, some 1,500 in total.
Torrox Council signs agreement with the DGT
The Mayor of Torrox, Francisco Muñoz (PSOE), has signed an agreement with the Directorate General of Traffic (DGT) to strengthen collaboration between the two institutions and, it is said, to improve road safety. The agreement will, amongst other things, allow the Local Police to access driver information, vehicle registration details and permit the deduction of licence points of offenders.
Extra controls on motorcycles and mopeds
The Nerja Council has decided to join the DGT road traffic ‘campaign’ taking place throughout this week, so motorcycle and moped riders can expect extra controls within the municipality. It should not be a problem, of course, as everyone will be wearing their safety helmet.
Bigger discounts when paying motoring fines
The parliamentary groups in Congress have agreed a joint amendment to the penal reform relating to road safety, whereby a reduction of 50% is applicable if motoring fines are paid within fifteen days. The current discount is 30% and the original penal reform contained a proposal to raise this to 40%. Other proposed amendments include:
