Inflation lowest for 40 years

Unemployment at record high
Unemployment in January 2009 hit an all-time high, reaching 3,327,801 according to the Ministry of Manpower and Immigration. Since January 2008, unemployment has risen by 1,065,876, a 47.2% increase. All sectors of industry have been affected.
Weekend toll
A total of 22 people lost their lives on the roads in Spain at the weekend, with a further 10 people seriously injured. During January 2009, there were 153 fatalities on the Spanish roads, 21 (12%) fewer than the same period last year.
Recession, it’s official now
The Government has confirmed that Spain is now officially in recession.
Inflation down to 1.5%
The rate of inflation at the end of December 2008 was 1.5%, the lowest figure for a decade and 2.8% less than at the end of December 2007. Inflation has been slowly falling for the past five months.
