Today sees the start of a DGT ‘zero tolerance’ crackdown on driving under the influence of drink or drugs, with random testing being carried out at all times of day and on all types of roads. The crackdown will continue until July 15th.
New prescription charges
The so-called ‘co-payment’ system for prescriptions, basically just another means of squeezing more money out of the public to fund government overspending, came into operation on Sunday and, so far at least, has proceeded ‘without incident’ according to the authorities. Then again, it was a Sunday.

Plans for variable speed limits
The Interior Minister, Jorge Fernández Díaz, has announced government plans to install new panels on all Spanish motorways and dual carriageways to set variable maximum speed limits based upon prevailing weather and other road conditions.
Borrowing costs hit record high
Confidence in the bailout (or “victory for the Euro”) of Spain’s ailing banks does not appear to be very high as Spain’s borrowing costs have risen to the highest rate since the launch of the euro in 1999, with the benchmark 10-year bond yield hitting 6.81%.
Spanish banks to be bailed out
Spain is to get up to 100 billion in loans from eurozone funds to try to help shore up its ailing banks after finally succumbing to the inevitable and asking for a bailout.
Large counterfeiting organisation dismantled
Police have broken up an organisation involved in bringing counterfeit goods into Spain, arresting twenty people and seizing over 200,000 counterfeit items.

According to the Spanish Association of Pediatrics, 26% of Spanish children aged 6 to 10 years are overweight and 19.4% are obese.
