Unemployment rises

Unemployment in Spain rose during the second quarter of 2010 with a record 4,645,500 people now unemployed, 20.9% of the working population.

Natural gas prices set to rise

The price of natural gas is set to rise as from July 1st. The Tariff of Last Resort (TUR) T2 will increase by 8.1%, T1 by 7% and T3 by 9.3%. These increases do not take into account the rise in IVA (VAT) from 18% to 20%, also effective July 1st.

Much hooting in the streets as Spain overcame Portugal 1-0 to reach the quarter finals of the World Cup and a meeting with Paraguay who, earlier in the day, beat Japan on penalties.

Government suspends proposed electricity hike

The Minister for Industry, Tourism and Trade, Miguel Sebastián, has announced that the proposed increases in electricity tariffs as per July 1st have been suspended.

The Spanish parliament has ratified labour reforms designed to tackle the country’s economic woes and bring down the high unemployment, currently standing at 20% of the working population.

After ten years of steady growth, the birth rate per one thousand inhabitants in Spain fell from 11.37% to 10.73% in 2009.

Spain got their World Cup ambitions back on track with a comfortable 2-0 win over Honduras, David Villa grabbing both goals and missing out on several other chances, including a penalty which he managed to hit wide of the goal.
