Three new police officers for Torrox

Three more officers have joined the Local Police force in Torrox, bringing the total number to thirty-five. Three others also joined the force fairly recently and the goal is to bring the total number of officers up to forty by 2011. Torrox has a population of around 20,000, with roughly 7,000 being foreigners.

Private hospital planned for Torrox

Torrox Council is to hold a special plenary session today in which it hopes to endorse plans to build a 250 bed private hospital in Calaceite. Bescanvi S.L., who are proposing to build the medical facility, has already reached an agreement with the group El Fuerte Hotels to develop a part of a plot of land it owns in Calaceite.

As part of a European programmme, Torrox is being ‘twinned’ with Kirkel in Germany and Mauleón in France. An exhibition of photographs relating to the German connection has been set up in the municipal building El Convento and is open for public viewing between 10:00 and 15:00 until November 21st.

New Civil War graves discovered in Torrox

The first conference relating to the Historical Memory held in Torrox at the weekend was attended by almost 200 people, many of them relatives of people who died during the Spanish Civil War. The conference was also attended by historians, and the exchange of information between themselves and the relatives led to the surprising discovery of two new mass graves.
