Calle El Barrio now has seven palm trees adorning one side of the road, nice touch. Shouldn’t be long now before it’s finished.
Planting plans in Cártama
The Department of Roads and Works in Cártama is planning some embellishments to the green areas in various parts of the municipality. The plans include the planting of 21 coconut trees in calle Colombia, 16 orange trees on the carretera de Alhaurín el Grande and 7 jacarandas in the Santo Cristo Park.
Replacement of trees near the cemetery
Work has started to replace the five Cypress trees near the cemetery which had to be removed due to being dried out. An analysis of the soil suggests that a chemical was used to deliberately kill the trees and the Guardia Civil is now carrying out an investigation.
Tree replacement project
The Council is planning to replace all the damaged trees between Torrox and Maro and along avenida Alcalde Antonio Villasclaras, about fifty trees in total.
Let there be trees
Work is currently being carried out in calle Antonio Millón to plant and stabilise trees in the ornamental boxes now lining the street. The works in the area are getting very close to completion, which will be good news for both the businesses and residents in the neighbourhood.
Holes, but still no trees
Since its fairly recent inception, the Nerja Green Party has been quite active documenting shortcomings within the municipality, presenting proposals for a more ecological future and denouncing various incidents and acts which they feel are detrimental to the community.

As the Council begins to rip out the trees in calle Chaparil as part of a project to make parking easier, the newly formed Nerja Green Party are not happy bunnies. Their latest press release, complete with photos, is reproduced here (unedited).

Sunday protest
The Nerja Green Party will be holding a demonstration outside the Town Hall at 7.30pm tonight and collecting signatures to stop over 100 trees, all 20+ yrs old, in Calle Chaparil from being chopped down and replaced with palm trees. If you are passing by then they would appreciate your support.
Local protest
The Council decision to remove the existing (about 150) cork trees from calle Chaparil and replace some of them with palms has not met with everyone’s approval and, using a Facebook campaign amongst other means, a group of local people are protesting this decision.
